This award recognizes notable achievement in the field of aviation safety
— civil or military — in method, design, invention, study
or other improvement. The award’s recipient is selected for a “significant
individual or group effort contributing to improving aviation safety,
with emphasis on original contributions,” and a “significant
individual or group effort performed above and beyond normal responsibilities.”
The award was established in 1956 by the late Clifford E. Barbour and
his son, Clifford E. Barbour Jr., in memory of the elder Barbour’s
wife, a passenger on a DC-3 that struck a mountain near Morgantown,
West Virginia, U.S., on April 14, 1945. All 20 people in the airplane
were killed. The Barbour family used the insurance settlement to institute
the award, which includes $500 and a handsome, wood-framed, hand-lettered
citation.
The nominating deadline is May 9, 2008; the award
is presented at the FSF International Air
Safety Seminar (IASS).
