Flight Safety Digest CoverPlease note: Flight Safety Digest was one of the seven separate FSF publications that were superseded by AeroSafety World in 2006. Some printed copies are still available, and issues dating back a number of years can be read online and downloaded through the links to the left. Use the search engine at the top of the page to locate issues with information about specific topics.

Flight Safety Digest (FSD) is the Foundation’s flagship publication. Each issue is devoted to a subject that is, in the editorial staff’s view, of special importance to the aviation community. In the FSD, these subjects can be explored at greater length than is possible in other, more sharply focused FSF periodicals.

FSD articles have described the latest innovations in training, technology and management. Authors have analyzed controversial industry issues and shared their observations of important, but sometimes subtle, influences that affected the issues.

The Foundation often uses the FSD as the vehicle for wider dissemination of vital safety information published in official reports with limited distribution, particularly outside the country of origin. One recent issue, for example, reprinted a study of improper flight crew response to malfunctions of turbine engines and related systems. Another issue provided a reprint of an official accident report that contained an extraordinary depth of useful safety information.

The FSD also has provided the results of landmark FSF technical initiatives, including findings, conclusions and recommendations regarding prevention of the two greatest causes of aviation fatalities — controlled flight into terrain and approach-and-landing accidents; and principles and guidelines for corporate flight crew duty time and rest scheduling.

Issues not devoted exclusively to a single subject include regular features on aviation safety-related statistics, new publications received at the Foundation’s Jerry Lederer Aviation Safety Library and brief accounts of accidents and incidents based on early data that provide examples of “lessons not learned.”

Monthly. Established 1982. One-color magazine, 8-inch x 10-inch format, 16 to more than 100 pages.
