Established in 2002, this award is made possible by a gift from the
Friendship Fund in honor of Richard Teller Crane, who died in 1996. Crane
was a pilot who, with his friend David Morrison, launched an organization called Flight Safety
Foundation in 1945 to study human factors in the design of aircraft cockpits.
In 1947, that organization combined with Aircraft Engineering for Safety,
which was led by Jerome F. “Jerry” Lederer.
The vision of these founders carrying on their projects under Flight
Safety Foundation established a strong
framework for the international aviation safety initiatives that we continue
today. The Richard Teller Crane Founder’s Award recognizes sustained corporate
leadership through lasting contribution to, or support of, aviation safety
and safety programs.
The award includes a handsome, wood-framed, hand-lettered citation and
a specially designed
trophy with the recipient’s name inscribed.
Historically, the Richard Teller Crane Founder’s Award has been presented
anually. The Flight Safety Foundation Board of Governors and the award’s
board agree that going forward, this award will be presented every other
year.
The nominating deadline is May 22, 2009; the award is presented
at the FSF International Air Safety Seminar
(IASS).
