Flight Safety Foundation–Boeing is presented to Capt. Yun-Ling Lee
For a 50-year career dedicated to airline safety, exemplifying initiative that exceeded his duties as an airline pilot and senior executive. Capt. Lee joined China Airlines as a line pilot after completing his university education as an engineer and military pilot training. He was appointed flight safety officer, directing programs that included Taiwan’s first training on crew resource management. As deputy director of flight operations and then as director of the Flight Training Center, he developed one of the region’s most advanced facilities. Later, as the airline’s inspector general, he advocated high standards of industrywide safety performance. While president of Far Eastern Air Transport Co., he transformed the company into a competitive international airline, worked with aviation officials of the People’s Republic of China, introduced nonpunitive safety-reporting systems, integrated flight operations and technical operations, and motivated excellence through employee empowerment. After accidents in the late 1990s, he accepted a government request to return to China Airlines as chairman. In this politically turbulent, economically dynamic environment, Capt. Lee again was respected as an effective leader with an undisputed commitment to safety. Flight Safety Foundation and the award’s sponsor, The Boeing Co., are pleased to recognize the achievements of Capt. Yun-Ling Lee. FSF 56th annual International Air Safety Seminar Stuart Matthews |
