Flight Safety Foundation is presented to Thomas J. Yager
For his leadership in improving aircraft-tire performance on wet pavement, particularly through evaluating and promoting the effectiveness of transverse grooving to counteract hydroplaning. During a 40-year career at the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley Research Center, Mr. Yager has been involved in a large number of tire/pavement-friction studies using NASA Langley’s Aircraft Landing Dynamics Facility, instrumented ground-test vehicles and specially instrumented test aircraft. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 technical reports, articles and presentations describing the results of his studies. He participated in investigations of accidents involving skidding for the Canadian Aviation Safety Board, the Portuguese Investigation Authority, the Swiss Federal Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force as well as NASA. Between 1987 and 2003, he was a consultant in the investigation of 30 accidents in which loss of tire friction was suspected as a cause. Mr. Yager brought his expertise to the Shuttle Landing Facility Runway at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. Flight Safety Foundation is pleased to recognize Thomas J. Yager for his contributions to aviation safety. FSF 57th annual International Air Safety Seminar Stuart Matthews |
