Flight Safety Foundation is presented to Capt. Paul Anthony Woodburn
For leadership in aviation safety, for inspiring international volunteers, and for effectively overseeing project teams as chairman of the Flight Safety Foundation Approach-and-landing Accident Reduction (ALAR) Steering Committee and as chairman of the Controlled-flight-into-terrain (CFIT) and ALAR Action Group (CAAG). In his 36-year career, Capt. Woodburn was involved in designing, selecting and testing aircraft and avionics. In management roles and as a captain for British Airways, he also helped to develop procedures and regulations, and to harmonize best practices involving two-member flight crews, extended-range twin-engine operations, Joint Aviation Requirements–Operations, and terrain-awareness and warning systems (TAWS). As director of safety, International Air Transport Association (IATA), he led various initiatives such as the IATA Operational Safety Audit, a common auditing standard for airlines. Under Capt. Woodburn’s guidance, specialists completed a report, Killers in Aviation, which became the world’s premier reference for preventing approach-and-landing accidents. Implementation evolved into the FSF ALAR Tool Kit, used by thousands of pilots, airlines and civil aviation authorities. The U.S. Commercial Aviation Safety Team and other safety authorities validated and embraced this vital work. Flight Safety Foundation is pleased to recognize Capt. Paul Anthony Woodburn for his contributions to aviation safety. FSF 56th annual International Air Safety Seminar Stuart Matthews |
