For his contributions to commercial aviation safety through studies and activities that have helped reduce the accident rate.

While serving as a chief engineer with the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, Dr. Weener led a program of data-driven studies and public information campaigns to show the necessity for additional safety enhancements if the number of accidents was not to rise proportionally with the growth of traffic.

His activities helped drive industry initiatives toward risk reduction. Dr. Weener introduced the concept of accident prevention strategies, a method for early identification of preventative actions.

Dr. Weener was chairman of the Flight Safety Foundation Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT)/Approach-and-landing Accident Reduction (ALAR) Committee, which developed the CFIT Education and Training Aid. He played a key role in developing the FSF ALAR Tool Kit, which has also been in high demand internationally.

He remains active in FSF activities, serving as co-chairman of the Ground Accident Prevention program and leading International Advisory Committee and Board of Governors activities to determine areas that promise further safety improvement.

Flight Safety Foundation and the award’s sponsor, Honeywell, are pleased to recognize Earl F. Weener for playing a leading role in the progress of aviation safety.
