Air BP Ramp Safety Award

presented to

Dries Viljoen
South African Airways

For his wide-ranging innovations in ramp safety tailored to the needs and conditions of the African continent.

Mr. Viljoen, head of ground safety, South African Airways, is credited with the development and implementation of a number of programs that have directly led to ramp safety improvement in Africa.

He established a ramp safety audit and reporting system that functions in Africa; provided loss-prevention calculations that have influenced management to strongly support ramp safety; created proactive, ramp safety monitoring “feedback” in eastern, central and southern African nations; and offered expertise for the development of ramp safety requirements in developing nations.

Mr. Viljoen has devoted much of his own time to improving ramp safety standards for airlines in addition to his employer, and has helped advance the cause as chairman of the International Air Transport Association Airside Safety Group and as a speaker at many international safety conferences.

Flight Safety Foundation and the award’s sponsor, Air BP, is pleased to recognize Mr. Viljoen’s contribution to aviation safety.
