Flight Safety Foundation presented to Capt. Warren Vanderburgh For his development and implementation of the Advanced Aircraft Maneuvering Program (AAMP), which combines knowledge of aerodynamics and of human factors to instruct pilots on methods to extract maximum performance from their aircraft during ground-proximity warning system warnings, wind shear encounters, critical flight-attitude recoveries and stall recoveries. Capt. Vanderburgh has provided AAMP instruction to more than 20,000 pilots, including instructors from other airlines and from corporate aviation departments. The eight-hour program emphasizes the basic requirement to “fly the airplane first” and provides guidance to establish a proper balance between the use of automation and maintenance of flying skills. Working with Asok Ghoshal, Capt. Vanderburgh developed flight-simulator software that replicates realistically aircraft performance during maneuvering at the edge of the flight envelope. Hundreds of pilots have cited AAMP as a significant advance in training, and five pilots have said that the training saved their lives. Capt. Vanderburgh’s AAMP research on methods of assessing aircraft wing performance also has led to wider adoption of angle-of-attack displays in transport aircraft. Flight Safety Foundation is proud to recognize Capt. Warren Vanderburgh for his outstanding contributions to aviation safety. FSF 54th annual International Air Safety Seminar
