Flight Safety Foundation presented to Capt. Doug Schull For the safe return of Continental Airlines Flight 60 to Newark (New Jersey, U.S.) International Airport on the night of April 25, 2000, after the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 they were flying underwent multiple engine problems, tire failures, aircraft damage and related handling complications. During takeoff, just after passing V1, a catastrophic failure occurred in the aft turbine section of the no. 1 engine and the crew received a fire warning. Uncontained debris, including fan blades and cowling parts, struck the landing gear and the fuselage of the airplane. This caused tire failures and more debris to be thrown forward and up into the fuselage. The debris punctured the fuselage in at least 10 places with many of the holes approximately the diameter of a basketball (9.5 inches [24 centimeters]). Aircraft hydraulic lines were cut and hydraulic fluid sprayed onto the inside of the wheel wells and into mechanical areas. Debris also entered the no. 3 engine, causing severe vibration and operation at reduced power. The crew dumped fuel to improve performance and conducted an emergency landing. Flight Safety Foundation is pleased to recognize Capt. Doug Schull, Bill Duus and Bob Mazur for responding to this emergency in a professional manner under difficult circumstances.
