Flight Safety Foundation presented to Larry Pynn
For conceiving and producing three news articles combining investigative and feature writing on accidents involving the air taxi industry in British Columbia, Canada; on a federal interagency dispute concerning the investigation of the Swissair 111 fatal accident; and on bird strikes at Vancouver International Airport. Pynn, a Vancouver Sun reporter, demonstrated initiative, fact-finding skills and clear writing. While displaying specialized aviation knowledge, the articles were readily comprehensible and capable of enhancing the public’s understanding of issues in the air transport system. The subject matter, which could have been exploited for sensationalism, was handled in a factual, accurate style designed to generate light rather than heat. The articles exemplified responsible and probing aviation safety reporting. Flight Safety Foundation and IHS Aviation Information, the award’s corporate sponsor, are pleased to recognize Larry Pynn for his significant contribution to aviation safety awareness.
