Flight Safety Foundation Presented to Don Phillips For his contribution and commitment to excellence in aviation reporting. Mr. Phillips, as a staff writer for The Washington Post, has consistently written in-depth and balanced articles that have set the standard for fairness, accuracy and objectivity in aviation reporting. In deadline and news analysis reporting on the May 11 ValuJet Flight 592 and July 17 TWA Flight 800 accidents, Mr. Phillips demonstrated that media coverage of aviation accidents need not be driven by presumption and speculation. Mr. Phillips’ articles consistently provided his readers with thorough and understandable explanations of complex aviation industry and safety issues. He was a rare voice of caution, reminding his readers that early speculation about the causes of aircraft accidents is nearly always proven wrong by the results of painstaking accident investigations. Mr. Phillips’ insight into the aviation industry has contributed greatly to providing the public and the aviation community with a fair and critical assessment of the industry’s successes and its failures. Flight Safety Foundation and the award’s sponsor, IHS TransPort Data Solutions, are pleased to recognize Mr. Phillips’ contribution to aviation reporting.
