Flight Safety Foundation Presented to Joseph O. Nester For leadership in increasing awareness of ramp and hangar safety, and in the reduction of US Airways aircraft ground-damage incidents on airport ramps and in the airline’s maintenance facilities. Since his appointment in 1996 as director of ground and maintenance safety, Mr. Nester has been instrumental in the continuous reduction of US Airways aircraft ground-damage incidents and injuries related to such incidents. Under his leadership, aircraft ground-damage incidents were reduced by 20 percent in 1997, 36 percent in 1998 and 14 percent in 1999. Mr. Nester has achieved these improvements by finding the root causes of problems affecting ground and maintenance safety, and by ensuring implementation of corrective actions. He also has conducted safety audits to assess the effectiveness of the corrective actions. Mr. Nester has increased the awareness of ramp and hangar safety among US Airways employees and senior management. His credibility, dedication and hard work have made the airline a safer place in which to work and have reduced costs significantly. Flight Safety Foundation and the award’s sponsor, Air BP, are pleased to recognize Joseph O. Nester for his contributions to aviation safety. FSF 53rd annual International Air Safety Seminar
