Flight Safety Foundation Presented to Elizabeth A. Marchak Beginning in November 1994, Elizabeth A. Marchak, a Washington, D.C.-based reporter for The Plain Dealer, published a series of articles focused on safety deficiencies among some U.S. air carriers. With the support of her editorial management, Marchak’s primary beat became aviation safety. Marchak exercised diligence, fairness, accuracy and resourcefulness in gathering information to support her articles that reported on bogus and unapproved parts; repair and inspection procedures; and oversight of start-up airlines. While her articles were aggressive and discussed shortcomings within the government and the industry, in keeping with the true spirit of a free press, they brought important issues into the open, where support could be generated to take action to improve safety. Flight Safety Foundation and the award’s sponsor, IHS TransPort Data Solutions, are pleased to recognize Elizabeth A. Marchak for her reporting on aviation safety.
