For an in-depth newspaper article about safety issues in emergency medical services (EMS) helicopter operations.

The authors identified an issue that has received little attention in general-interest publications and presented the findings of extensive background research in an accessible way. Their work focused on safety and, while discussing serious deficiencies, was balanced and devoid of sensationalism.

The article said that some EMS helicopter pilots were trained inadequately for flights that often must take place at night and in instrument meteorological conditions, under severe time pressure; that EMS helicopters do not carry — and are not required to carry — terrain awareness warning systems or flight data recorders; and that some operators provide no specific training for flight in conditions of low visibility.

Flight Safety Foundation and IHS Aviation Information, the award’s corporate sponsor, are pleased to recognize Alan Levin and Robert Davis for their significant contribution to aviation safety awarenessty.
