For a long and distinguished career dedicated to improvement in resources for safe flight.

As a research scientist at the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Agency’s Ames Research Center, Dr. Lauber played a key role in developing the concept of crew resource management. He organized a landmark conference on flight deck resource management, and his early definition of CRM is still widely accepted.

In later positions at the National Transportation Safety Board, Delta Air Lines and Airbus, Dr. Lauber’s influence on behalf of safety has been felt in nearly all aspects of aviation: operations, regulation, accident investigation, education and research. His work has enhanced safety-related practices among personnel throughout the aviation system, from line technician to pilot to CEO.

His contributions — through his research, presentations and writing — have promoted numerous significant innovations in human factors and motivated others to improve systems and share safety lessons learned. Dr. Lauber was an important figure for many years on the Flight Safety Foundation Board of Governors and the Icarus Committee.

Flight Safety Foundation and the award’s sponsor, The Boeing Co., are pleased to recognize the achievements of John K. Lauber.
