For Professionalism in Flight Safety is presented to

The Flight Crew, KLM CityHopper Flight KL 1636
February 16, 2002

For extraordinary airmanship in handling an airliner after its engines were seriously damaged by ice ingestion during takeoff of the Fokker 70 at Turin, Italy. Thirty passengers were aboard the aircraft.

As determined later by the investigating authority, ice ingestion had caused severe damage to the right engine, making it inoperable, and reduced the power output of the left engine.

The flight crew resolved the situation by calling on their training and discipline. Using only the remaining operating engine, the flight crew landed the airplane safely at the departure airport.

The pilots’ actions, inspired by a strong training and safety culture within the air carrier, demonstrated their highly professional piloting standards and resourcefulness as well as the value of an air carrier’s prioritizing safety in its business ethic.

Flight Safety Foundation is pleased to recognize the flight crew of KLM CityHopper Flight KL 1636 for successfully responding to a sudden critical event in an exemplary manner.
