Flight Safety Foundation presented to Capt. Mike Holtom For his achievement in ensuring safer utilization of aircraft by conceiving, developing and advocating the use of the British Airways Safety Information System (BASIS), which has been adopted by some 100 airlines worldwide. As the author of BASIS, Capt. Holtom has promoted the disclosure of vital safety information, enabled the intelligent analysis of routine operational data and provided tools that encourage proactive safety management. He recognized a need not only for large airlines to adopt information technology in safety programs, but the necessity of user-friendly systems that would offer safety-management benefits to all types and sizes of operators, regardless of the location or type of fleet. The European Regions Airline Association (ERA) has used BASIS extensively as part of the Safety Information Exchange and within ERA (ERASIS) to facilitate the dissemination of operating experiences and safety experiences among operators. Flight Safety Foundation and the awards sponsor, Aviation Week & Space Technology, are pleased to recognize Capt. Mike Holtom for his contributions to aviation safety.
