Flight Safety Foundation Presented to Capt. K. Scott Griffith For outstanding contributions to aviation safety by initiating, gaining approval for and implementing the American Airlines Safety Action Partnership (ASAP) program. Capt. Griffith recognized that a more systematic approach, involving a high degree of employee cooperation, was needed to fully identify, understand and resolve potential safety problems in aviation operations. As the culmination of his many years of voluntary service on behalf of aviation safety, he designed and originated the ASAP program, which has now become an industry standard. The 18-month program based on pilot self-reporting and a cooperative, corrective effort to improve safety required partnership among the American Airlines pilots, the pilots’ union and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). It was so successful that it has been adopted by other airlines and was the model for an FAA Advisory Circular providing guidance to air carriers and repair stations for establishing similar programs. Capt. Griffith is working to expand ASAP program partnerships to include flight and ground operations, maintenance, dispatch and related areas, and to combine other safety reporting programs with ASAP. Flight Safety Foundation is proud to recognize Capt. Griffith’s dedication and leadership in furthering aviation safety. FSF 50th annual International Air Safety Seminar Stuart Matthews |
