Air BP Ramp Safety Award

presented to

Underwing Partners Safety Leadership Team
Delta Air Lines

For safety-process innovation by Delta Air Lines and a cross-functional team of ground-handling contractors, fuelers and food service providers working together with a unified approach to create a safer ramp environment.

Since its formation in 1996, the Underwing Partners Safety Leadership Team has grown to nine corporate members; achieved substantial savings by reducing injuries among ground-handling employees, aircraft damage and insurance costs; and piloted ramp-safety technology.

Meeting quarterly, the team developed a common safety business plan, shared strategies and tactics for risk management, conducted team audits and set a benchmark for ramp-safety performance in a dynamic business environment in which contracts for ground-handling services have proliferated.

The team has developed behavior-based safety training for cabin-service staff, including adoption of handheld computers to record safety observations and quality-audit data for immediate feedback; worked on the development of ultrasonic collision-prevention technology; and supported redesign of hitches on tugs, baggage carts and transporters.

The team has focused on making improvements for enhanced ramp safety, sharing improvements with customers and airports; there has been no attempt to isolate improvements for use by a single carrier.

Flight Safety Foundation and the award’s sponsor, Air BP, are pleased to recognize the Underwing Partners Safety Leadership Team for its contributions to aviation safety.
