Flight Safety Foundation Presented to the Aeromedical Education Division, For its significant contribution to aviation safety awareness through excellence in aeromedical publications. The Aeromedical Education Division, Civil Aeromedical Institute, produces publications and brochures that disseminate aeromedical and human factors safety information to pilots and FAA aviation medical examiners, as well as other civil aviation authorities throughout the world. The division has published the Federal Air Surgeon’s Medical Bulletin since 1964. This publication offers timely safety- and health-related information to aviation medical examiners who are responsible for the assessment of fitness to fly of some 640,000 U.S.-certificated pilots in 86 countries. Article subjects include medical certification issues, self-imposed stress factors (such as alcohol, smoking, drugs and fatigue) and aeromedical developments that pertain to safe aviation performance. The bulletin is widely subscribed to by universities, libraries, pilot schools and civil aviation authorities. Medical Facts for Pilots provides useful and factual information on topics such as hypoxia, disorientation, over-the-counter medications, altitude decompression sickness, and seat belts and shoulder harnesses. The brochures are accurate and written in a style that communicates effectively to pilots. About 100,000 copies are distributed annually. Other publications for which the division is responsible include the Medical Handbook for Pilots, Aviation Physiology and Global Survival. Flight Safety Foundation and the award’s sponsor, IHS TransPort Data Solutions, are pleased to recognize the Aeromedical Education Division’s contribution to the health and safety of pilots and their passengers.
