The Honeywell Bendix Trophy for presented to James F. Bothwell For vision and commitment to implementing the first instrument flight rules (IFR) interhospital network using global positioning system (GPS) point-in-space approaches and departures by emergency medical services (EMS) helicopters. In 1994, Mr. Bothwell envisioned a network of instrument approaches to hospitals not normally served by EMS helicopters in instrument meteorological conditions. As chief operating officer and director of operations for STAT Medevac, he was the driving force for a project that included developing GPS approach-and-departure procedures, equipping EMS helicopters for single-pilot instrument operations, and training and qualifying pilots to conduct the operations. The project resulted in the introduction of safe EMS helicopter service in instrument conditions to hospitals in the network. In fiscal year 1999, STAT Medevac helicopter crews conducted 382 GPS approaches. The project’s success has prompted development of GPS point-in-space approaches at other hospitals and increased IFR operation of EMS helicopters. Flight Safety Foundation and the award’s sponsor, Honeywell, are pleased to recognize James F. Bothwell for his contributions to aviation safety.
