Flight Safety Foundation presented to Boston Logan International Airport
For an innovative safety program that has established partnerships within the airport community, uniting a multitude of ramp service facilities and achieving measurable success. Under the leadership of Thomas J. Kinton Jr., director of General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S., the procedures of a variety of stakeholders were reshaped in the interest of safety. At monthly meetings, more than 25 public and private agencies develop strategies to identify and solve problems that create unsafe situations. As these conditions are ameliorated, the ramp safety team works together to prevent new problems from becoming serious. The team’s methodology includes increasing awareness through improved airport-based training; standardizing safety signage and procedures; identifying and sharing best practices; and enhancing and coordinating enforcement of airport rules and regulations. Among the results of this program were a 50 percent reduction in motor vehicle accidents on the ramp and a 20 percent reduction in fuel spills during a recent six-month period. Flight Safety Foundation is pleased to recognize the Boston Logan International Airport Ramp Safety Team for its contribution to airport safety.
