The AlliedSignal Bendix Trophy for Aviation Safety has been reestablished in 1998 by AlliedSignal to recognize contributions to aerospace safety. In the first year, three awards were presented jointly by AlliedSignal and Flight Safety Foundation. In subsequent years, an independent award board will meet to select recipients under the auspices of the Foundation. With the Bendix Trophy and Bendix Air Race as its heritage, The AlliedSignal Bendix Trophy for Aviation Safety is given to individuals or institutions in recognition of efforts culminating in improvements to aerospace safety through innovation in advanced safety equipment and equipment utilization.

In 1998, the award has been given to Capt. David A. Fleming, British Airways; Capt. Edward D. Mendenhall, Gulfstream Aircraft; and Capt. Edmond L. Soliday, United Airlines, for providing critical support and data for the reduction of controlled-flight-into-terrain (CFIT) accidents, which led to the development of the enhanced ground-proximity warning system (EGPWS) for corporate and airline operations.

The award includes a one-quarter-scale reproduction of the original Bendix Trophy, a framed certificate, and travel to Flight Safety Foundation’s International Air Safety Seminar for the award presentation.
