Flight Safety Foundation Presented to Don Bateman For his development of the Enhanced Ground-proximity Warning System (EGPWS), the latest of his many avionics designs that have significantly improved aviation safety. Mr. Bateman envisioned and designed the first GPWS, which is used in nearly all international transport aircraft and is widely credited with helping to avoid many controlled-flight-into-terrain (CFIT) accidents. Yet he recognized that refinements to the original GPWS were needed. Mr. Bateman’s new EGPWS removes many of the limitations of the earlier system. Advanced algorithms, precision navigation inputs and a worldwide terrain database avoid the problem of vulnerability in rapidly rising terrain. Thanks to EGPWS, pilots can receive a warning approximately one minute before projected impact, and view a display of hazardous terrain that enhances situational awareness. During nearly 40 years, Mr. Bateman has earned 30 U.S. and 80 non-U.S. patents in his work on terrain-avoidance systems and advanced avionics. His distinguished service to aviation safety is proudly recognized by Flight Safety Foundation. FSF 50th annual International Air Safety Seminar Stuart Matthews |
