Flight Safety Foundation to Donald Bateman For providing leadership, management and coordination in the development of the enhanced ground-proximity warning system (EGPWS). Mr. Bateman’s role involved coordinating the development and adoption of worldwide terrain databases from the U.S. Department of Defense and from other countries. This required encouraging the declassification of certain terrain information and extensively correcting errors in terrain data. He worked diligently with flight management system manufacturers to integrate land- and satellite-navigation system information into the EGPWS hardware, to provide more accurate determination of aircraft position and altitude over terrain hazards. His task also involved integrating the EGPWS with the space, power requirements and cockpit displays of earlier-generation systems, making it easier to retrofit the newer system into existing aircraft. Mr. Bateman continues to work on improvements to the EGPWS, with the goal of its worldwide installation in civil and military aircraft. Flight Safety Foundation is proud to recognize Donald Bateman for his outstanding contributions to aviation safety. FSF 51st annual International Air Safety Seminar Stuart Matthews |
