The Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award

presented to

Don Bateman
Honeywell

For his many key contributions to aviation safety during his 48 years in the industry and, in particular, for his leadership in developing ground-proximity warning system (GPWS) equipment and enhanced GPWS (also called terrain awareness and warning system, or TAWS). GPWS and TAWS have been instrumental in reducing controlled flight into terrain (CFIT).

The award was established by Clifford E. Barbour and his son in memory of Laura Taber Barbour, who was killed in a CFIT accident involving a Douglas DC-3 that struck a mountain near Morgantown, West Virginia, in 1945.

Don Bateman began work on the original GPWS in 1969. Under his guidance and leadership, this technology has been continually refined and upgraded. Improvements in warning algorithms, introduction of wind shear detection, the addition of a terrain database and runway aural awareness are among the improvements.

Flight Safety Foundation is pleased to recognize the innovations, dedication and concern for aviation safety that have contributed to fulfilling the purposes for which the Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award was created.
