Flight Safety Foundation presented to Australasian Aviation Ground Safety Council For the councils achievements and continuing efforts to improve ramp safety. Since its formation in 1982, the Australasian Aviation Ground Safety Council has grown into a widely recognized group of ramp-safety specialists. Council members include airlines, airports, ground-handling organizations, consulting agencies and the air forces of Australia and New Zealand. The council conducts seminars and sponsors the development of training materials to improve the understanding and prevention of ramp-safety accidents and incidents. The council’s efforts to reduce back injuries among baggage handlers resulted in the adoption by the region’s major airlines of a baggage weight limit of 71 pounds (32 kilograms). Also among the council’s many achievements were the improvement of rescue service and fire service at a major airport, and its success in encouraging the international adoption of improved airport rescue and fire-service response-time criteria. Flight Safety Foundation and the award’s sponsor, Air BP, are pleased to recognize the Australasian Aviation Ground Safety Council for its contributions to aviation safety.
