The Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award presented to John R. Ackland
For his contributions to advanced technology for all-weather operations, including required navigation performance and performance-based navigation, and to realistic airplane system safety assessments. Mr. Ackland’s technical and leadership skills have played an important role in developing new airplane systems and operational concepts for Category I, II and III approach minimums and criteria, thereby improving the air carrier safety record, especially in low visibility conditions. Required navigation performance, a critical element in the next generation of precise landing systems, already has resulted in fewer missed approaches and less risk of controlled flight into terrain.
Mr. Ackland also was critical to improving the utility and reliability of autoflight systems. A frequent participant in United States–European harmonization working groups, he was actively involved in the creation of recently published, updated regulatory standards and criteria for those systems. Flight Safety Foundation is pleased to recognize John R. Ackland for a long and ultimately successful campaign to improve technology, regulatory criteria and industry standards on behalf of safety. In doing so he has helped fulfill the purposes for which the Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award was created. FSF 60th International Air Safety Seminar Willaim R,
